Founded in 2004, the University of South Dakota’s Alternative Week of Off-campus Learning (AWOL) program sends groups of students on trips around the country and internationally to serve communities and learn about the issues they face. Our student volunteers travel locally on weekends or to distant destinations over winter, spring, and summer breaks. USD AWOL is a member of the national alternative break organization, Break Away.

Past trips have taken our students to Orlando, New Orleans, Springfield (MO), Guatemala, and even locations right here in South Dakota! Each trip has addressed a particular social issue such as education, health care, or sustainability; and students who participate in the trips do as much learning as they do serving. But don’t take our word for it – you can read our student testimonials here. Or, check us out in the Argus Leader!

Participating in an AWOL trip provides students with an opportunity to travel, interact with community members from diverse backgrounds, gain hands-on skills, and make friends that will last a lifetime.
