About the 2018 Serve and Learn
Serve and Learn is a great experience for freshmen new to USD and Vermillion to truly experience the community and people here. On the first day, the Serve and Learn volunteers had the opportunity to move in and learn a little about the focus of the Serve and Learn experience this year, food insecurity. Many of the participants were shocked when they learned about the food insecurity problems located here in Vermillion. The following day, the group of volunteers heard from Kelsey Collier-Wise, who serves on the United Way board. Kelsey is also a member of the City Council. Then the volunteers served at a local, organic farm: Heikes’ Family Farm. There Serve and Learn helped with picking apples, sweetcorn, raspberries and many more fruits and vegetables that were all grown organically. Thursday the group volunteered with locals doing a school supply drive. Some fetched bags full of school supplies, others helped children decorate folders, and the rest even helped select book bags. On the closing day, volunteers helped the rest of the freshmen move into their dorms at North Complex. Overall, it was an amazing week filled with service, reflection, and laughter.
